4204. John¹³ Howland (Henry¹⁴) was born in Of Fen Stanton, Huntingdonshire, England 1602. John died 23 February 1672 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA, at 69 years of age. His body was interred 29 May 1672 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA.

He married Elizabeth Tilley 25 March 1623 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Mass. Elizabeth was born 30 August 1607 in Henlow, Bedfordshire, England. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Tilley and Joan Hurst. Elizabeth died 21 December 1687 in Swansea, Bristol, MA, at 80 years of age. Her body was interred December 1687 in Brown Lot, Little Neck Cemetery, Riverside, RI.

John Howland is an ancestor to President George Bush, and to First Lady Edith (Carrow) Roosevelt (Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt). President Richard Nixon and Vice President Gerald Ford are descendants of John Howland's brother Henry.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY:

John Howland came on the Mayflower as a servant to John Carver. He is best remembered for having fallen off the Mayflower during a mighty storm, as recorded by Bradford:

"In sundry of these storms the winds were so fierce and the seas so high, as they could not bear a know of sail, but were forced to hull for divers days together. And in one of them, as they thus lay at hull in a mighty storm, a lusty young man called John Howland, coming upon some occasion above the gratings was, with a seele of the ship, thrown into the sea; but it pleased God that he caught hold of the topsail halyards which hung overboard and ran out at length. Yet he held his hold (though he was sundry fathoms under water) till he was hauled up by the same rope to the brim of the water, and then with boat hook and other means got into the ship again and his life saved. And though he was something ill with it, yet he lived many years after and became a profitable member both in church and commonwealth."

4206 ii. John Howland was born in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA 24 February 1626/1627. John died 1702 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, at 75 years of age. He married Mary Lee 26 October 1651 in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

+ 4162 iii. Hope Howland was born 30 August 1629.

4207 iv. Elizabeth Howland was born in Plymouth, MA 1634. Elizabeth died 26 January 1683 in Oyster Bay, Long Island, NY, at 48 years of age. She married twice. She married Ephraim Hicks 13 September 1649 in Plymouth, Mass. She married John Dickenson 10 July 1651 in Plymouth, Mass.

4208 v. Lydia Howland was born in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA February 1635. Lydia died 11 January 1710 in MA, at 74 years of age. She married James Browne about 1651 in (of) Plymouth, Plymouth, MA.

4209 vi. Joseph Howland was born in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA about 1637. Joseph died 1 January 1704 at 66 years of age. His body was interred September 1704. He married Elizabeth Southworth 7 December 1664 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA.

4210 vii. Ruth Howland was born in Scituate, Plymouth, MA 16 September 1637. Ruth died 23 August 1726 in Plympton, Plymouth, MA, at 88 years of age. She married Thomas Cushman November 1664 in Plymouth, Mass.

4211 ix. Jabez Howland was born in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA 1644. Jabez died 7 April 1708 in Bristol, Bristol, RI, at 63 years of age. He married Bethia Thacher 1660 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Mass.

4212 x. Isaac Howland was born in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA 16 November 1649. Isaac died 29 October 1727 in Marshfield, Plymouth, MA, at 77 years of age. He married Elizabeth Vaughan.
