297. Edward7 Kelley was born about 1811 in Scotland. He died 25 February 1862 in Newport, RI, "aged 50 years". His occupation was listed as Cotton Spinner on the 1838 birth certificate of his daughter Margaret, "Mule Skinner" in the 1850 Rhode Island census, and Clerk in the 1860 Rhode Island census. Edward emigrated to Newport, Rhode Island in 1841, most likely following a wave of emigration to staff the textile mills in Rhode Island. Cummersdale, where he lived prior to departing for Rhode Island, was home to The Holme Head Works (Ferguson Brothers Ltd) that opened in 1824. The mill processed cotton brought in from the United States, through the Port of Whitehaven and for a short time, Port Carlisle. (more at www.carlisle.gov.uk)
He married Margaret Palmer. Margaret was born in 1810 in England.

156 i. James6 Kelley was born 1831 in England. He died 07 Jul 1894 in Newport, Rhode Island. During the 1860 federal census, he was living with his parents in Newport and was employed as a Machinist. He married Elizabeth Jane Smith b. 3 Dec 1831 in England dau. of Thomas and Hannah Smith. d. 10 Sep 1907 in Newport RI. Immigrated in 1845. Eight children - 5 still alive in 1905. Parents both born in England. Episcopalian. "Owns lunch room" (1905 census for Jamestown, RI) They had:
157 ii. Joseph John Kelley was born 12 May 1833 Cummersdale, Carlisle, Cumberland, England. He was living in Pawtucket, RI in the 1850 census and Newport, RI in the 1860 census where he was employed as a Carpenter. He married Julia Fitzpatrick who was born in Rhode Lsland in 1832. They had Joseph Wallace b. 25 Mar 1867 d. 9 Dec 1930 and Edward William b. 5 Jun 1869. He was naturalized in February 1860 in Newport, RI.
158 iii. John Kelley was born 11 Oct 1835 Cummersdale, Carlisle, Cumberland, England. No further record.

161 vi. William Henry Kelley was born 1845 in Rhode Island. He died 10 Dec 1897 in Newport, RI. He was living in Pawtucket, RI in the 1850 census and Newport, RI in the 1860 census when he was employed as an Apprentice Blacksmith. By 1870 he was employed as a machinist. He married Mary F. Kinnecune, daughter of Benjamin A. Kinnecune and Sarah W. Gardiner, on 10 Sep 1869. She was born in 1851. They had Marion Augusta Kelly 16 Aug 1874 and William Irving Kelly 20 Oct 1878.
162 vii. Thomas Kelley was born 1847 in Rhode Island. He was living in Pawtucket, RI in the 1850 census. He was not listed with the family in the 1860 census.
163 viii. Albert Kelley was born 1 Jan 1850 in Pawtucket, Bristol, Massachusetts. He was living in the 1850 census (enumerated on 1 June 1850). He was not listed with the family in the 1860 census.
