He married Alice Glover 13 September 1603 in Lydd, Kent, England. Alice was born 1583 in of, Softwood, Kent, England. Alice was the daughter of William Glover [Sir] and Anne Goverard. Alice died 14 August 1657 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA, at 74 years of age.

James Bates and Alice Glover had the following children:

3707 i. Thomazine¹² Bates was born in Lydd, Kent, England 26 May 1605. Her body was interred 6 April 1606.

3708 ii. Johanna Bates was born in Lydd, Kent, England 1605/1626.

3709 iii. William Bates was born in Lydd, Kent, England 19 July 1607. William died 29 September 1925 in England, at 318 years of age.

3710 iv. Richard Bates was born in Lydd, Kent, England 12 November 1609. Richard died 6 March 1656 in England, at 46 years of age. He married twice. He married Susan Isham. He married Ellen Wallis.

3711 v. Lydia Bates was born in England October 1615. She married Roger Williams about 1649.

3712 vi. Elizabeth Bates was born in England about 1619. Elizabeth died 18 February 1679 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA, at 59 years of age. She married Thomas Lawrence 1638 in Hingham, Plymouth, Mass.

3713 vii. Mary Bates was born in Lydd, Kent, England 21 November 1619. Mary died 5 January 1702/1703 at 83 years of age. She married Hopestill Foster 1639 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA.

3714 viii. Margaret Bates was born in Lydd, Kent, England 16 September 1621. She married Christopher Gibson about 1640/1641.

3715 ix. John Bates was born in Lydd, Kent, England 4 May 1623. John died 15 September 1625 at 2 years of age.
